Users are able to specify ‘rules’ that will accompany their messages. These rules can all be set at the time of message creation, but all message options can still be edited after the message has already been sent. This is possible because a message is stored in only one virtual location (the PEN), so the policies can effectively be changed without worrying about keeping other copies of the message up to date.
These rules can be as general or as specific as a PEN allows. Examples include:
- Recipients are only allowed to reply to this message before July 30, 2009.
- This message expires in 10 days.
- Recipients require the permission of the sender before forwarding this message.
- Replies to this message must be in a plain text format.
Specific PENs may allow for any combination of policy stipulations regarding sent messages. New policies can easily be set up by the administrators of individual Private Email Networks.
